 My Solo Journey

I had never intended to adopt, let alone adopt as a single parent, however, being a parent was all the mattered to me and so I dug deep and made the call. I can’t tell you how grateful and in awe I am of all the Social Workers, Foster Families, Children and fellow Adopters who I have met through Adopt North East. Despite my anxieties of going solo, I was guided through the whole process with kindness, consideration, communication, time and space. Not only did I meet my most special little boy, but I’ve also met lifelong friends who I can relate to and enjoy this journey with.

From the start, I was kept informed of what was coming and why. There is a lot of training and meetings to juggle, and the content can be intense at times. However, it’s reassuring to know that while everyone’s stories and situations are different; we are all in the same big, welcoming, safe and supportive boat! My Social Worker helped me with things I hadn’t even thought I might need help with. From learning about adoption, filling out forms, communicating with my family and friends, meeting new families and friends and accessing a wealth of resources, she was on it! I couldn’t have asked for a kinder, more knowledgeable, personable and professional human being to walk me through everything. Huge thanks to her and my little boy’s Social Worker for their immense care. Although daunting, I personally found the whole journey insightful and empowering! It can be pretty valuable to learn so much about yourself in such a relatively short space of time.

Not only was my journey supportive, but my little boy’s journey was equally as smooth and considered. His needs were always a priority and all the people around him were so in tune with his lovely little personality. My little boy had a happy and healthy transition into my home and we continue to enjoy a fun and supportive relationship with his Foster Carers. My little boy is hands down the best thing about me and to imagine life without him is unbearable. He is so happy, settled, attached and engaged in his journey – such an amazing little man!

So, to summarise, I can honestly say that our life is full, our home is messy, our hearts are bursting and our lovely little family is forever! I highly recommend Adopt North East to everyone who is considering widening their circles of joy and love!
